Every Sunday morning I join Crieve Hall Church of Christ via Facebook live streaming for worship service. I am fed the truth, and I am fueled with spiritual nourishment.
Sunday 21st October 2018, Bill Watkins gave a sermon that has not left me since. I have constantly thought on the scriptures and the message, so much so that I have felt compelled to share the lesson with you.
The Bible is our manual to life; the scriptures are all God-breathed so isn’t it then all that we should live by?
The sermon is called “When we don’t know.” As Bill teaches in the sermon, when we don’t know, we must go to the scriptures. The Palms, in particular, have a multitude of guidelines to live by, and here Bill gives eleven prayers. I’m sure he could’ve preached all day, but he has only pointed out these very relevant points to help us as we try to survive in this crazy world of today.
Here are the eleven “When we don’t know” prayers; when we don’t know what or how to pray
- When we cannot sleep – Psalm 3:5
“I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.”
- Negative thinking – Psalm 19:14 (pray this before you say anything negative)
“May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight,
Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.”
- Guidance from God – Psalm 25:4
“Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths.”
- Being afraid – Psalm 27:1
“The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?”
- Broken hearted – Psalm 34: 17 – 18
“The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
- Repentance – Psalm 51: 1-2
“Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.”
- When we have strayed – Psalm 51:10
“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”
- God’s protection – Psalm 61: 2 – 3
“From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe.”
- Praise God – Psalm 70: 4
“But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who long for your saving help always say, “The Lord is great!”
- When you feel tempted – Psalm 141:4
“Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil so that I take part in wicked deeds along with those who are evildoers; do not let me eat their delicacies.”
- When you want to see God’s will – Psalm 143: 10
“Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.”

When you don’t know what to pray, or how to pray the Holy Spirit will reveal your prayers as long as the Holy Spirit is alive in you.
Thank you, Bill Watkins, for serving our Lord and feeding my spiritual life with God’s word.
The problem with not knowing….
is that we don’t know WHAT we don’t know.
You can either drive yourself up the wall, or you can have Faith.
Somehow the latter just seems to make more sense to me.
Thanks Aileen!
Great message. Thanks for the encouragement.
